Computers are fun but the real power comes from networking them together, so it becomes possible to use the strengths of different machines.

For myself, I have had a wired and a wireless network for a number of years now. My home network is centered around a machine called Delphis which handles both of these networks and is my home file server, internet gateway, web and mail server. As such it gives me great control about how my home networking is set up.

Another such network is a VPN, and I use that too. I have found the OpenVPN project has been a very stable solution for years. This way I can connect laptops over the wireless network securely (an additional layer of security to the WPA-PSK key and MAC filtering I employ on my wireless network) and also I use the VPN to connect other machines over the internet that I wish to be able to open 'privately' to just myself.
